Not everyone is bending the knee.
Some are fighting the power. And those are the people and groups this newsletter will be all about.
There’s no overarching term for this community -- at least not yet. It used to be called The Resistance, but its members reject that name this time around for being anachronistic, not to mention being a bit of a failure.
For now, I’m calling it the Fighting Back community, adapted from the name of one of the several active coalitions of progressive groups, called the Fight Back Table. (That one operates mostly under the radar. Others, like Democracy 2025, operate more publicly.)
The community includes pro-democracy groups like Democracy Forward and Protect Democracy, working alongside pro-consumer and civil-libertarian titans like Public Citizen and the American Civil Liberties Union. There are environmental groups like Earth Justice and the Sierra Club. There are reproductive rights organizations like Planned Parenthood and Reproductive Freedom for All. There are mobilization organizations, like Indivisible and MoveOn. There are civil rights groups and LGBTQ+ groups like the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and the Human Rights Campaign. There are immigration groups like the American Immigration Council. There are unions, like the American Federation of Government Employees. There are new groups like State Democracy Defenders Action, and old groups like Common Cause.
I’m writing this newsletter because I’m curious about what they’re going to do, how they’re going to do it, and whether it will work. I hope you are, too, and will join me in my quest to find answers.
Here's a fuller list of groups I’ll be keeping an eye on. Email me at froomkin@gmail.com if you think there are groups I should add (or remove.)
